What Safety Equipment Should You Carry In Your Car?

Another winter is upon us, and most of us are trying our best not to think of the blustery days, the chapped skin, and trying to stay warm in general. But what would you do if you were stranded on the side of the road in the bitter winter months? Would you have all of the necessary safety equipment to ensure that you’re safe and warm? Store bought trunk safety kits are a great start, but more often than not, they’re not really enough. Most of us don’t bundle up as much as we should to brave the dash from the house to the car, and the car to the office. So what exactly should you keep in your vehicle at all times?

Here is a comprehensive list of what we, and the Government of Canada believe will keep your limbs warm, and your family safe this coming season:

  • Food that won’t spoil, such as energy bars
  • Water—plastic bottles that won’t break if the water freezes (replace them every six months)
  • Blanket
  • Extra clothing and shoes or boots
  • First aid kit with seatbelt cutter
  • Small shovel, scraper and snowbrush
  • Candle in a deep can and matches
  • Wind‑up flashlight
  • Whistle—in case you need to attract attention
  • Roadmaps
  • Copy of your emergency plan
  • Sand, salt or cat litter (non-clumping)
  • Antifreeze and windshield washer fluid
  • Tow rope
  • Jumper cables
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Warning light or road flares

The Government of Canada has many safety tips and tricks to ensure that in an emergency, you know exactly what to do. We all remember the snowstorms that left many stranded along highways, and you never know when that can hit. We at St.Amand Auto & Truck Repair care about your safety, and that of your family. Next time, we’ll touch on exactly how to winterize your vehicle, and how we can help!

Thank you, from all of us to all of you.
