Here in the Niagara Region, I would say that we’re fairly spoiled in the ways of weather. Our springs are warm, summers balmy, and fall is ideal for sweaters, yet still warm enough to avoid bulky coats. Even our winters are among the mildest in Canada, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be ready for that inevitable blizzard that kicks off our winter season. St. Amand Auto & Truck repair has a few tips to help you face the upcoming season, whether it’s mild or we get buried under 4 feet of snow, it’s important to be ready well ahead of time.
The first thing that every Canadian thinks of for winter, is to have 4 good snow tires installed on their vehicle. With all the different brands, treads, and promises, it can get confusing and a little overwhelming to pick the right ones. Thankfully, our team knows the ins and outs, and consults with each customer as to what works best for them. Although tires are very important to keep you on the road, there are a few key elements that not everyone thinks of.
Battery
Your motor needs a fully charged battery to start in cold weather. Clean battery posts and check the charging system and belts. Have your battery tested in the fall and spring. Replace weak batteries before they fail.
Ignition system
Replace defective ignition wires, cracked distributor caps and worn spark plugs, since they can make starting difficult or may cause a sudden breakdown.
Lights
Make sure that all lights work and that headlights are properly aimed.
Brakes
Check or service your brakes to ensure even braking. Pulling, change in pedal feel, or unusual squealing or grinding may mean they need repair.
Tires
Check pressures often, especially before any highway driving. Properly inflated, high quality winter tires will give you best traction on winter roads and increase fuel efficiency. After all, with sudden breaking and icy conditions, anything can happen, and winter tires are your best insurance.
Exhaust system
Check for leaks that could send deadly carbon monoxide into your vehicle.
Heating and cooling system
Check your radiator hoses and drive belts for cracks and leaks. Make sure the radiator cap, water pump and thermostat work properly. Test the strength and level of the coolant/anti-freeze, and make sure the heater and defroster work well.
Windshield wipers
Make sure that your wipers are in good condition. Replace blades that streak. Purchase wipers designed for winter use. Fill up on winter washer fluid in the -40°C temperature range and carry an extra jug in your vehicle.
Remember to always check road and weather conditions before you leave, give yourself extra time, and carry an emergency kit in your vehicle at all times. Always travel with a fully charged cell phone just in case of emergency.
