We hear it all the time, “the mechanic said they fixed it but it’s still making that sound” or “the mechanic told me something needs to be replaced that I don’t think needs to be replaced, can you check it?” Has this ever happened to someone you know or worse, to you?
We hear so many stories about con mechanics who have taken advantage of our customers. How do we stay safe and avoid a scam? St Amand Auto & Truck Repair Inc. wants to share a few tips about what to look for in a reliable mechanic or automotive shop.
- Ask friends who they recommend- if they feel like they’ve been conned, there’s a good chance they were, and you probably will be too! St. Amand Auto &Truck Repair Inc. encourages you to do your homework, look up reviews, ask around before taking it somewhere just because of convenience.
- Identify the reason you’re taking your car in before you take it in- if you are able to explain what your car is doing before you go to the mechanic you are less likely to get conned. This one can be tricky because not everyone is an expert on cars. St. Amand Auto & Truck Repair Inc.’s answer…get to know your car, read the manual, go to car care seminars, come to our She-chanic event on May 6th and learn some tips and tricks so you won’t get taken advantage of!
- Think independent- do I repair at an independent shop or at a dealer? At the end of the day you’re going to do what you think is best however many dealerships will treat you as a potential car sale so the customer service tends to be lacking. Independent shops have always been there to serve the neighbourhood, St. Amand Auto & Truck Repair Inc. invites you to come in and enjoy a cup of coffee with us. We want to get to know you, your family and your car!
- Get a quote- shop around and get some quotes, just because you get one quote doesn’t mean you have to go with that shop. Ask about the quality of the parts being used and the warranty on them. Cheaper doesn’t always mean better. Something important to remember, if you don’t go to the same shop all the time, keep your receipts. This makes it easier to check what was been replaced instead of you having to remember.
- Ask questions- get to know your mechanic and automotive shop, ask about their history and get to know the owner. Another thing to keep in mind is to look for certifications, take a look around the shop, what are they certified in and how recent are their certifications?
At the end of the day we want you to find a facility that you are comfortable with and are qualified to do the work. Develop an ongoing relationship with them, and don’t jump from shop to shop looking for the next best deal. Finally, enjoy driving a safe and reliable vehicle.
Stay safe and on the lookout,
St. Amand Auto & Truck Repair Family
